Why We Created This Guide

Many people feel a pull toward fostering but aren’t sure where to begin. The decision carries meaningful responsibility, and it deserves space, clarity, and honest information—not pressure. We created this guide to support individuals and families who want to understand what fostering truly involves before taking the next step.

At Eastern Residential Services, we know that strong foster homes are built on readiness, openness, and realistic expectations. This guide offers a grounded look at the day-to-day experiences of fostering in Ontario, the supports available to you, and the personal qualities that help create stability for children and youth.

Our goal isn’t to convince you to foster. It’s to help you determine whether fostering aligns with your life, your values, and the support system around you. When people make informed decisions, everyone benefits—especially the children who rely on safe, consistent, and nurturing homes.

If you discover that fostering could be the right path, we’re here to offer training, guidance, and a committed partnership as you explore further. And if you decide it’s not the right fit, that’s valuable clarity too. Your decision, and your timeline, remain entirely your own.

What You’ll Learn Inside

This guide is designed to give you a clear, honest understanding of what fostering involves—before you make any decisions. Inside, you’ll find practical insights, reflection prompts, and straightforward information about how foster care works in Ontario and how agencies like Eastern Residential Services support families.

Here’s what the guide covers:

The qualities that support successful foster parenting
A look at the strengths, mindsets, and personal traits that help foster parents create stability, including patience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. This section focuses on personal readiness rather than perfection.

What fostering really asks of you
A balanced overview of the time commitments, emotional demands, teamwork with professionals, and routines involved in caring for a child or youth who may have experienced uncertainty or trauma. It helps you understand what daily life may look like.

Common misconceptions about fostering in Ontario
Clear explanations that address frequent misunderstandings, such as who can apply, the types of supports available, and how foster care works under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act.

How support and training work with ERS
An introduction to the role of a foster care agency, including the training you receive before welcoming a child and the ongoing guidance available throughout your fostering journey. This section emphasizes partnership—not promises or guarantees.

• Reflection questions for you and your household
Gentle, practical prompts that help you consider your readiness, your support network, and the dynamics within your home. These questions are meant to encourage conversation and self-awareness.

• What to do if you’re ready to learn more
Information on how to take a next step at your own pace, whether that means reaching out with a question, attending an information session, or simply continuing to explore fostering quietly and privately.

This guide doesn’t tell you whether fostering is right for you—it gives you the tools to make that determination with confidence and care.

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is designed for anyone who wants an honest, grounded starting point in understanding foster care. It’s especially helpful for people who are curious but not yet sure whether fostering is the right path for them.

It’s written for:

• Individuals or couples considering fostering for the first time
Maybe you’ve been thinking about fostering quietly for a while, or perhaps the idea is brand new. This guide offers a calm, pressure-free space to explore what fostering involves and how it may fit into your life.

• Families who want clarity before taking the next step
Many families want to understand the responsibilities, expectations, and supports associated with foster care before reaching out to an agency. This guide provides a foundation so you can feel prepared and informed.

• Licensed foster parents exploring a transition to ERS
If you’re currently fostering with another agency and wondering how ERS operates, this guide outlines our approach to support, training, and partnership—without discussing children’s personal details or making any guarantees.

• Professionals or community members who simply want to learn more
Teachers, social workers, healthcare providers, and community leaders sometimes seek a deeper understanding of foster care to support the children and families they work with. This guide offers balanced, accessible information.

• Anyone who believes they may have the space, stability, and compassion to help a child or youth—but needs more information first
Fostering is a significant commitment. This guide helps you explore that possibility with honesty and reflection, on your own timeline.

The goal is not to convince you to foster. It’s to give you clear information so you can make the decision that is right for you, your household, and your future.

About Eastern Residential Services

Eastern Residential Services (ERS) is a foster care organization based in Midland, Ontario, serving children and youth who need safe, stable, and nurturing homes. Founded in 2008, ERS was built on a clear belief: when foster parents are well-supported, children and youth experience greater stability and stronger opportunities to heal, grow, and thrive.

ERS is led by Executive Director and owner Tom O’Brien, and supported by a dedicated team committed to providing responsive, meaningful guidance to foster families. Our role is to walk alongside caregivers—offering training, practical tools, and ongoing support—so they never feel alone in the fostering process.

We work within the standards of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act and follow all provincial requirements for foster care licensing, safety, and oversight. Above all, we prioritize the wellbeing, dignity, and privacy of every child and youth in our care.

ERS does not promise outcomes or placements. Instead, we focus on building strong relationships with foster parents, equipping them with the skills and support they need, and ensuring each home is prepared to provide consistent, compassionate care.

Our mission is simple: to help foster families create environments where children feel safe, valued, and supported—because lasting change begins with a stable, caring home.
